Job Description


The UK`s National Physical Laboratory sits at the intersection between scientific discovery and real world application as one of the world’s top three National Measurement Institutes. There is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated scientist to join NPL’s Time and Frequency group to work on optical frequency measurement techniques based on femtosecond combs. This expanding area of activity is an integral part of our research programme to develop the next generation of high accuracy optical atomic clocks based on laser-cooled trapped ions and atoms, which are expected to contribute to a future change in the definition of the second. Current research activities include the development and optimisation of a continuously operating universal synthesizer based on a femtosecond comb referenced to a state-of-the-art ultrastable laser system. This new laser system will be a central reference point for NPL’s optical clocks, providing high stability optical and microwave signals to probe the clock transitions as well as enabling the different clocks to be compared with the highest possible stability and accuracy. Such comparisons are not only critical to progress in frequency metrology, but can also lead to highly sensitive tests of fundamental physical theories.

The successful candidate will also play a key role in collaborative projects to compare NPL’s optical clocks with similar clocks being developed within other national measurement institutes, for example over European optical fibre networks or as part of the Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space (ACES) mission that is due to be launched in 2019. We are also exploring the potential application of optical clocks to measure the Earth’s gravity potential with high spatial and temporal resolution.

The ideal candidate will be qualified to PhD level in physics, electronic engineering or a related subject, preferably with postdoctoral experience in a relevant field. However graduates who can demonstrate relevant experience and the potential to carry out independent research will also be considered for the position. Previous experience in optical frequency metrology, laser stabilization, and electronic design (both analogue and digital) would be desirable, as would prior experience of working within international collaborations.

The role will be based in Teddington, but some occasional travelling will be required.

We are a national laboratory and we currently have hubs in South West London, Cambridge, Birmingham, Huddersfield and Strathclyde. Benefits include 27 days` holiday, Life Assurance and Contributory Pension Scheme.
